LANs, Virtual LANs, and WANs

Local Area Networks (LANs) cover a limited physical distance whereas Wide Area Networks (WANs) cover much larger areas. The jargon of "area networks" includes many other possibilities.
LANs, WANs, and Other Area NetworksBesides LANs and WANs, other types of area networks like MAN and SAN also exist. Find out more about the difference between LANs, WANs, and all the rest.
LAN - A DefinitionA Local Area Network (LAN) supplies connectivity to a group of computers in close proximity to each other such as in an office building, a school or a home.

Little Rock, AR

Retail Success Story

Contrary to popular belief, Sam Walton (the founder of Wal-Mart) was not from Arkansas. He was actually born in Kingfish, Oklahoma on March 29, 1918. He was raised in Missouri where he worked in his father's store while attending school. This was his first retailing experience and he really enjoyed it. After graduating from the University of Missouri in 1940, he began his own career as a retail merchant when he opened the first of several franchises of the Ben Franklin five-and-dime franchises in Arkansas.
This would lead to bigger and better things and he soon opened his first Wal-Mart store in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas. Wal-Mart specialized in name-brands at low prices and Sam Walton was surprised at the success. Soon a chain of Wal-Mart stores sprang up across rural America.

High Speed Internet

Speed Up Your Web
Are you tired of your slow modem chugging along and taking 3 hours to download the latest and greatest software updates? You don't have to face that problem anymore in most areas of Little Rock! High speed Internet access is available and most of your friends probably already have either cable modem access or DSL. Southwestern Bell says DSL is better than cable. Comcast says it's faster than DSL. What do you do? Who do you choose? I've had both running and am here to dish the dirt on the two major broadband Internet providers in Little Rock.

TCP/IP - Transmission

TCP/IP is arguably the single most important computer networking technology. The Internet and most home networks support TCP/IP as the "language" computers use to find and connect with each other.
What is TCP/IP?TCP/IP is an extremely popular network protocol that enables communication between most of today's computers. Did you know that TCP/IP is over 30 years old?
IP Tutorial and Course OutlineThis tutorial explains IP, TCP, and UDP networking in a progressive series of articles.
Internet Protocol (IP) Practice ExamThis interactive question-and-answer quiz tests your knowledge of IP, the foundation protocol of TCP/IP. Use this resource to help prepare for certification exams or to quickly learn important technical details about IP.

P2P Networking

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networking eliminates the need for central servers, allowing all computers to communicate and share resources as equals. Music file sharing, instant messaging and other popular network applications rely on P2P technology.

P2P is a standard approach to network design that eliminates the need for dedicated servers. P2P is also a popular term for freely available Internet file sharing software systems.
P2P Software Progams and Networks TutorialPeer to peer networks comprise both peer workgroup LANs and P2P file sharing networks. Discover why P2P has rapidly grown to become arguably the most interesting class of network applications.

Linux Technology

CompTIA Linux+ 2005 Course
Linux Technology Overview
The CompTIA Linux+2005 certification is an international industry credential that validates the knowledge of individuals with at least six months of practical Linux experience. Professionals who want to certify their technical knowledge in basic installation, operation and troubleshooting for Linux operating systems should consider this certification.
As a CompTIA Linux+ certified individual you will have the knowledge to implement security options on client systems, configure security-related files, and grasp common security practices. In addition, they will have the knowledge necessary to determine installation methods, select appropriate settings, protocols, and software packages. The individual has demonstrated proficiency in everyday management of Linux-based clients and basic management of server systems.
The CompTIA Linux+ exam covers approximately 90 percent of the problems that computer technicians, help desk staff and system administrators routinely encounter today with commercial Linux applications from Novell's SUSE Linux, Red Hat, Mandrake, and TurboLinux.
CompTIA Linux+ Certification
The skills and knowledge measured by this examination were developed with global input to assure accuracy, validity and reliability. Earning the CompTIA Linux+ designation means that the candidate can explain fundamental open source resources/licenses, demonstrate knowledge of user administration, understand file permissions/software configurations and manage local storage devices and network protocols.
Because Linux, by its nature, is vendor-independent, there was a strong need in the industry for a basic, comprehensive Linux certification. Becoming CompTIA Linux+ certified gives an individual a recognized industry credential that offers proof of knowledge and expertise in Linux technologies. This certification also provides a path to a variety of fulfilling and challenging Linux-related careers.

Operating Systems

Operating Systems
An operating system is a layer of software which takes care of technical aspects of a computer's operation. It shields the user of the machine from the low-level details of the machine's operation and provides frequently needed facilities. There is no universal definition of what an operating system consists of. You can think of it as being the software which is already installed on a machine, before you add anything of your own.
Normally the operating system has a number of key elements: a technical layer of software for driving the hardware of the computer, like disk drives, the keyboard and the screen; a filesystem which provides a way of organizing files logically, and a simple command language which enables users to run their own programs and to manipulate their files in a simple way. Some operating systems also provide text editors, compilers, debuggers and a variety of other tools. Since the operating system (OS) is in charge of a computer, all requests to use its resources and devices need to go through the OS.
Operating System Courses

We have courses that cover the individual Operating systems. These courses are ideal for individuals who are looking to enhance their knowledge and get some hands-on interactive training without having to disrupt the way their PC is set-up or for IT professionals who require specific training in specific Operating system technologies.
